Texture vs. Layered Bob
Ever have a client ask for “just a few layers” when their inspo pic screams textured bob? We get it. To help decode the difference, ARC™ Artistic Team Member and bob expert Chris Jones (@chrisjones_hair) breaks down how to identify—and cut—each shape for the perfect customized chop.
Textured Bobs:
- More subtle shape
- Less at-home maintenance
- Almost entirely one length
- Just enough texture to add movement
Layered Bobs:
- Works best for clients with natural texture or wave
- Requires a bit more styling
- Also great for clients with fine hair as the layers create volume without losing weight.
In summary, ARC™ Artistic Team Member Chris Jones (@chrisjones_hair) says, “Textured bobs have a more subtle shape and require less maintenance at home. Layered bobs look amazing on the right hair type but need more styling unless you have some natural texture or wave.”
Create Movement by Removing Weight
To create movement AND remove weight all in one step, Chris uses the 30/2 Reversible Blender from ARC™ Scissors. He slide cuts through the hair with the straight blade on the bottom, creating subtle graduation throughout.
The ARC Scissors 30/2 Blender is designed for soft, seamless blending—it removes just 15–20% of hair while maintaining structure. Its fully reversible handle allows Chris to flip the shear teeth-up or teeth-down for total control, making it ideal for refining perimeters and diffusing weight lines.

For Layered Precision
When cutting layered bobs, Chris relies on the PARAGON II by ARC™ for clean, controlled layering. Handmade in Japan with Super Gold steel, this scissor glides through dry hair effortlessly, giving him power and precision to carve shape without snagging or forcing the blades.
“I like to use my PARAGON II by ARC™ to cut square layers because they remove weight throughout the entire haircut. Once I have my layers throughout the head, I will go in and remove the corners to eliminate more weight.”

The Paragon II’s longer blades and heavier spine are designed for dry cutting and internal weight removal, allowing deep, intentional cutting without collapsing the perimeter—making it a staple for stylists who want strength and fluidity in one tool.

Pro Tip: When texturizing layered cuts, Chris says to follow the same sectioning pattern as the square layers because it will help maintain the shape of the cut. Instagram via @chrisjones_hair
